About this online exhibition at Galerie von Vertes

Galerie von Vertes is delighted to present Points of View: How Abstract Art Challenges Our Perception. This online exhibition explores how abstract art in the 20th century morphs and transforms expressions into forms, lines, and colours.

Analogous to a white cube, abstract art is a silent space in which forms are born freely, and a dialogue is established between the viewer and the work without any interference from the artist or a priori knowledge. Instead of imposing worldviews or reproducing nature or human civilisation, abstract art just is. It does not attempt to depict visual reality accurately, but instead evokes an act of discovery fuelled by creative mystery.

The groundwork for the birth of abstract art was laid in Romanticism, in which the highly valued imagination and subconsciousness introduced the dematerialisation of light and colour (see, for example, the luminous skies and seas of William Turner), inspiring their turn the impressionists to capture the fleeting impressions which led to the detachment from the representational function of art altogether.

This new look of art and at art was captured by Maurice Denis’ very poignantly when he stated in 1890 “It should be remembered that a picture—before being a war-horse, a nude, or an anecdote of some sort—is essentially a flat surface covered with colours assembled in a certain order.”

Finalised by abstract expressionists, who valued spontaneous, automatic, and subconscious creation, abstract art became en vogue at a time when a radical aesthetic was desperately needed to counter state censorship and oppression.

When there is no representational form to hold on to in the composition, the eye and mind roam freely over the canvas. Every glance is an invitation to observe, discover and excavate new ways of seeing and perceiving.
