Librairie Clavreuil has been a landmark of Parisian bibliophily since 1901, carrying forward a family tradition devoted to rare books, first editions, and historic manuscripts. Established by Charles Clavreuil in the literary heart of Saint‑Germain‑des‑Prés, the bookshop has occupied its address at 19 rue de Tournon since 1910, nestled between the Luxembourg Gardens, the Senate, and the Odéon theatre. Over the decades, its identity has been shaped by figures such as Lucien Scheler—friend to Paul Éluard, Picasso, and the Surrealists—who guided the shop after the Second World War, and by Bernard Clavreuil, who led the business for more than fifty years before passing it on to his son, Stéphane. Today, Stéphane represents the fourth generation of the family and also directs Stéphane Clavreuil Rare Books Ltd in London’s Mayfair district, opened in 2013.
Across more than a century, the bookshop has built an international reputation for its meticulous selection of works dating from the 13th to the 19th century, with particular emphasis on the history of ideas, major scientific and medical discoveries, literature, travel, and exploration. Collectors, curators, and scholars visit Librairie Clavreuil to find exceptional volumes that enrich and complete significant collections. In addition to its curatorial expertise, the bookshop offers a recognised, free, and confidential valuation service for antiquarian books and private libraries, and acquires rare works following expert appraisal.
